Fishing Report

Idaho

Henry's Fork

Box Canyon to Last Chance - Continues to fish well with adult golden stones with small beadhead droppers.

Harriman Ranch - Think Ants - little blacks and larger honey colored.  PMD's and caddis are still floating by, but the big bank feeders seem to be looking for ants and beetles.

Riverside Campground through Cardiac Canyon - Beautiful hike, beautiful fishing - Hoppers, PMX, Stimulators and other big attractors.

Warm River to Ashton - Best morning and evenings.

Silver Creek -  Mornings mean small and smaller - Baetis and Tricos on 6 & 7x.  Afternoons it is big and bigger - Hoppers on 1x.

South Fork of the Snake - Lower flows mean more riffles with dry fly patterns.  Afternoon winds mean hoppers up against the banks.

Yellowstone Park - Remember - the Madison Jct - Norris Road CLOSES August 17th!

Firehole -  Fishing but only in the late and cooler afternoons with hoppers and ants.

Madison River in the Park - Badly needed cool and wet weather has kept the Madison in play.  Look for the first of the fall run browns to start moving up any time.

Slough, Lamar, Soda Butte and Gardner - Because of the road closure you will need to take the Old Faithful to Lake, to Canyon and over Dunraven Pass route!  If you do, take lots of bug juice and a good supply of hoppers, beetles and ants.

Gallatin -  Fishing very well between storms that have muddied the water.  PMX and hoppers are your ticket.

Hebgen - Gulpers until the wind comes up around 2:00 PM.

Montana

Madison River - Hopper time!  Hope for afternoon breezes.  Focus on mid river with hoppers, crickets, beetles and ants from 1 - 4 pm.  Evenings it is caddis at Raynolds and $3.

Wyoming

Snake River near Jackson Hole - No current report.

Utah

Green River, UT - One of the most beautiful places and with some of the best fishing in the world.  The "rubber hatch" is mostly over!  Hopper and wet wading time.

Provo River - The Green Drakes are gone and so are the crowds.  The fat healthy browns are still there however and looking up for hoppers, ants and beetles during the day and caddis in the evening.

Colorado

Frying Pan, CO - If you missed the Green Drakes on the Henry's Fork this year think Colorado!  Mid day risers will keep your busy.

Guide Notes:

ANTS
Formicidae

Ants
Seasons:
Henry's Fork:          July, August and early September
Yellowstone:           July, August and early September
Madison:                July, August and early September

Habitat:
Grassy fields with stands of beaver downed trees bordering undercut banks, where the current is relatively slow.

Presentation:
Dead-drift - Get a good clean drag free drift and if the pattern sinks, so much the better. Ants are terrestrial insects, poorly adapted to being in the water and they drown quickly. If you are getting refusals, try getting your pattern to sink to nose level.  Many anglers have observed that trout actually seem to prefer ants over other morsels when a multiplicity of food items are available.

Time:
Ants swarm during the heat of the day.  Hope for an upstream breeze.

Size:
#14 - #22

Color:
Black, Honey, Red

Patterns:
Flying Black Ant
CDC Ant

Strategy:
A rise to a ant is opportunistic, and you may have to study a stretch of water for some time to locate a feeding fish.

Try casting few times to a likely looking spot and then move on. Hoppers present the fish with a one-shot opportunity, and if it's going to take, it will quickly. When you fish hoppers, it's the middle of a summer day, and trout won't be cruising the shallows or lying in a fast current waiting for insects. Slow currents running in protected, preferably shaded places are lies where big fish are often found.
